Privacy

Last updated 2 November 2026

The short version: we collect your email address only if you subscribe, we count visits without cookies, and we never sell or share your data.

Who is responsible

Signal and Noise is run by Jake Aquilina, Malta, who is the data controller for this website and newsletter. A contact address will be published here at launch.

Newsletter

If you subscribe, we store your email address and when and where you signed up, so we can send you the newsletter. The legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email. The newsletter is sent by beehiiv, which stores the list on our behalf and records whether emails are opened or clicked so we can see which stories are useful.

Visit statistics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies or similar storage on your device and does not build a profile of you. We see totals only: which pages are read, from which countries, which sites sent visitors, and device types.

If you click Accept in the cookie banner, we also use Google Analytics 4 to understand how stories are read: pages viewed, time on page, scroll depth, outbound clicks, approximate location and device. Google sets cookies (such as _ga) to recognise a returning browser. The legal basis is your consent. We do not use it for advertising, and Google signals and ad personalisation are off. If you click Decline, Google Analytics never loads.

Hosting

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web server, it processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse; we do not use it to identify you.

Cookies

Google Analytics cookies are set only after you accept them. Your choice is stored in your browser (as sn-consent) so we don’t ask again. You can change it at any time with Cookie settings. The sign-up form is provided by beehiiv and may set cookies needed for it to work; see beehiiv’s notice above.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you, or object to its use. Write to us using the contact above. You can also complain to the Information and Data Protection Commissioner in Malta (idpc.org.mt) or to the authority in your own country.
